Iran’s armed forces are set to kick off their annual combined military exercises in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.

Codenamed Zolfaghar 99, the drills will focus on the maintenance of the combined battle posture. They will also include rehearsals on operation of the combined command structure amid the pandemic.

During the joint military maneuvers, Iranian forces will test and assess their combat readiness, including testing new missiles, torpedoes and tactics.

They will also test their core combat capabilities to handle any perceived regional security threat, keeping troops prepared to conduct rapid and sustained combat operations anywhere in the region.

During the three-day drills, the Iranian navy will also help fight the pandemic. Officials also told Press TV the armed forces have much to contribute to contain the spread of the disease in local communities.

Iran says it has a long-term commitment to the region and its much-needed security. It also says it shares common concerns for regional security with its neighbors.
