Unsafe gatherings trigger resurgence of transmission: WHO chief
Resurgence of coronavirus transmission is occurring in clusters of cases relating to unsafe gatherings of people, chief of the World Health Organization (WHO) said Thursday at a press conference.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said countries need to make decisions about how to hold public events safely.
"Every country and community must make its own decisions about how to host these events safely, based on their own level of risk. In some circumstances, closures or suspending events may be necessary for a short time. In others, there are creative ways events can be held safely to minimize risk," he said.
"Some sporting events are experimenting with reintroducing limited numbers of spectators," said Tedros.
The pandemic has been an acid test for many countries and organizations, as well as for the International Health Regulations (IHR), the legal instrument agreed by countries that governs preparedness and response for health emergencies, said the director general.
Tedros said he had informed the WHO member states about the plan to establish an IHR Review Committee for advice on whether any changes to the IHR are necessary to ensure the international law is as effective as possible.
Global COVID-19 cases surpassed 24 million with the death toll exceeding 821,000 as of 14:44 Central European Summer Time (CEST) on Thursday, according to the WHO COVID-19 Dashboard.
