Twin blasts kill at least 10, wounds dozens in southern Philippines

At least 10 people have been killed and dozens more wounded in twin explosions that hit the town of Jolo in the southern Philippine province of Sulu.

The Philippine army said a blast happened around noon on Monday, when an improvised explosive device attached to a motorcycle parked outside a supermarket exploded next to a military vehicle.

A second explosion took place later just 100 meters away. Lieutenant General Corleto Vinluan said a female suicide bomber had blown herself up.

At least 10 people, including soldiers and civilians, were killed in the blasts. Dozens of others, among them 16 troops and 20 civilians, were also wounded.

Daesh bombing wounds eight people in southern Philippines

A bombing attack, claimed by Daesh, has wounded at least seven people in the southern Philippines.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

In a statement, Philippine police chief Gen Archie Francisco Gamboa said he had ordered a probe into the deadly incident.

Affiliates of the Takfiri Daesh terrorist group have in the past carried out bombing attacks in southern Philippines.

Sulu is known as the stronghold of the Abu Sayyaf Group, a militant group that has pledged allegiance to Daesh.

The group, which has long been battling for independence in the southern region of Mindanao, is notorious for kidnappings, robberies and deadly bombings.
