At a press conference with his Austrian counterpart in Vienna, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says Washington is going to do everything it can within its diplomatic tool-set to ensure the UN arms embargo against Iran does not expire.

The 13-year-old arms embargo is due to expire in October under the nuclear deal, known as the JCPOA from which the US withdrew in 2018. Political experts say the statement that the arms embargo is unrelated to the nuclear deal is simply not true.

Pompeo’s trip to Vienna also brought up the growing rift between Europe and Washington over the decision by European companies to work with Russia on the gas pipeline project known as Nord Stream 2.

Experts believe the US is concerned Russia might have too much influence on Europe. From Vienna, Pompeo will head to Warsaw where he’s expected to sign an agreement on an increased US military presence in Poland.
