Monsoon floods in northeastern India have destroyed thousands of hectares of farmland and have killed at least 86 people as of Tuesday, according to media reports.

Overflowing bodies of water in the eastern Indian states of Assam and Bihar have forced thousands to flee from their homes on boats and makeshift rafts.

The intense rains have displaced more than 2.75 million since May, authorities said on Monday.

"The situation is very bad here, everything has been damaged, and our houses have been damaged. The cattle are dying and we are facing difficulty getting food," one flood victim from Assam's Tinsukia district said.

The floods are proving to be a double challenge for India, which is also trying to control the coronavirus outbreak with lockdowns across the country, with more than 1.16 million confirmed cases and more than 28,000 deaths from COVID-19 so far.
