The governor of Tehran province has introduced new restrictions and bans after a worrying rise in the number of new coronavirus infections and fatalities.

Under the week-long restrictions, many businesses and activities will remain closed until further notice. The governor has also declared a ban on all social, cultural and religious gatherings. Wearing face masks has also become mandatory in crowded and public places.

Under the new directive, all universities, schools, libraries, theaters, museums, ceremony halls, barbershops, beauty salons, mosques and religious sites will remain closed for one week. The forced closures also apply to gyms, coffee shops, teahouses, zoos, amusement parks, indoor swimming pools, and fitness clubs.

The government insists people will receive services from public and private organizations and entities only if they observe protective and health protocols and wear masks. Employees can also go to work only if they wear masks and obey different health protocols. This is while the food and production sectors continue to work while observing the health protocols.

Health Ministry officials say week-long restrictions will not suffice and the scope of restrictions should be broadened in the coming weeks. They also say the current complicated circumstances require a different approach.
