Iran ranks first in the world in combating illicit drugs and organized crime.

Eskandar Momeni, director of Iran Drug Control Headquarters, says the country has the least international support in its campaign against drug trafficking.

Despite that, he told reporters in Tehran that measures taken in the fight against the crime have been highly effective.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Momeni said the United States and other Western countries are responsible for disrupting international drug-control efforts by exerting economic pressure on Iran and reducing their funding for UN projects.

Iran shares 1,600 kilometers of border with Afghanistan and Pakistan, and lies on the main trafficking route for poppy, the source of opium and heroin, from Afghanistan to Western Europe. The country has called on the international community to take joint responsibility and resume technical contributions to control drug trafficking and its impacts in the region and beyond.

International organizations affiliated to the UN confirm that Iran is at the forefront of the battle against drug trafficking.
