Americans are worried that the coronavirus pandemic will lead to a significant increase in the price of drugs and overall healthcare, according to a  new study.

Nearly nine in 10 US adults are "very" or "somewhat" concerned that the pharmaceutical industry will leverage the COVID-19 pandemic to raise drug prices, the survey by Gallup and West Health finds.

The study found that in addition to concerns over rising drug prices, 79 percent of Americans are also concerned  about rising health insurance payments and 84 percent are concerned about the rising cost of health care generally.

Respondents also faulted the US government for its response to the coronavirus, with 34 percent calling it “poor” and 23 percent calling it “fair.” Only 9 percent of respondents rate the government response as “excellent” and another 14 percent as “very good.”

The survey comes as polling shows Americans facing concerns over how they will pay for their health needs.

An uptick in coronavirus cases in many states over the past two weeks, along with rising COVID-19 hospitalizations, reflected a troubling national trend that has seen daily US infection numbers climbing after more than a month of declines.

US Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden accused President Donald Trump of “surrendering” to the coronavirus pandemic and failing to stay prepared for a resurgence that could put a US economic recovery at risk.

more than 2.1 million people in the United States are known to have been infected with the coronavirus to date, including 117,000 who have died from COVID-19, by far the most of any country in the world.
