US police operate as ‘right-wing terrorist force’ that must be disarmed: Analyst

Bill Dores

Police in the United States operate as a “right-wing terrorist force” to inflict fear among blacks and minorities in the country and must be disarmed and abolished, says a political commentator in New York City.

“The police use tasers, particularly on black people, as weapons of torture, just like they use rubber bullets; so [when] they fire them in someone's face - like I've seen the Israelis do it in Palestine - it can kill or blind,” said Bill Dores, a writer for Struggle/La Lucha and longtime antiwar activist.

“The object of the police is to inflict terror, especially on black communities and other oppressed communities, Native [American] people … Puerto Rican people,” Dores said in an interview with Press TV on Tuesday.

The United States has been hit by nationwide anti-racism rallies following the death of African-American George Floyd at the hands of a white US police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on May 25.

Floyd was choked to death after the officer kneeled on his neck for almost nine minutes.

Now, the city of Atlanta is the epicenter of protests against racial injustice after another African-American man, Rayshard Brooks, 27, was shot in the back by police and died in a restaurant parking lot last week.

Keisha Bottoms, the mayor of Atlanta, which is Georgia’s state capital and most populous city, called for a shake-up in police force and issued a series of administrative orders to accelerate a review of policing in the wake of Brooks' death.

Georgia prosecutors said they were weighing bringing charges against the policeman who fatally shot Brooks. The officer, Garrett Rolfe, was dismissed from the force and Atlanta's police chief resigned within hours of the shooting.

“The main thing is the police in this country really need to be disarmed entirely - no guns, no tasers, no pepper spray,” Dores said.

“They function as a right-wing, racist terrorist force, which is why people call them the Blue Klux Klan,” he added, a reference to police officers' blue uniforms combined with the name Ku Klux Klan, an American white supremacist hate group.

“We want to disarm the police as a step towards their abolition, and we want community control - people's control over the police,” Dores said. ”You do not need an army of gun thugs with absolute power - life and death power - over the people.”
