Peruvian scientists begin testing COVID-19 vaccine in alpacas, chickens
A team of Peruvian scientists begin testing a candidate vaccine to cure COVID-19 in chickens and alpacas.
Researches from the Farvet Lab, in Chincha Alta, and the Cayetano Heredia University, in San Martin de Porres, are aiming to develop antibodies that can be used to save coronavirus patients in severe conditions.
“That is what we are beginning to study these days: Antibodies produced in animals that when entering the patient's body reach the blood stream and begin to fight the virus. They reach the bloodstream and begin to fight the virus and neutralize it," said Mirko Zimic, head of the university lab.
"The vaccine is already in a mouse test. Then after the results we will pass to monkeys, primates and according to all the results that are being given, if they are satisfactory in the month of October we can be in the human phase," says Doctor Manolo Fernandez, Farvet Lab CEO.
Alpacas are being used in the test because they produce powerful antibodies.
