Tehran has condemned as “fruitless and indiscriminate”the recent US move to impose sanctions on the Iranian interior minister and other officials, saying that the hostile measure is a sign of Washington’s “weakness, confusion and desperation” in its Iran policy.

The US Department of Treasury on Wednesday imposed sanctions on Iran’s Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli and several other Iranian law enforcement officials and institutions over what it claimed to be their role in “human rights abuses.”

Reacting to the move on Thursday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Mousavi said the bans were a result of Washington’s “failure in facing the Iranian government and nation’s iron resolve” and indicative of the US regime’s “weakness, confusion and desperation” in dealing with the Islamic Republic.

The sanctions, he added, were designed “based on constant illusions and under the influence of incompetent advisers” and reveal “the complete futility” of Washington’s previous such anti-Iran bans.

Mousavi said that the recent restrictive measures are in contravention of Security Council Resolution 2231, which has endorsed the 2015 multilateral nuclear deal, calling on the world community to “hold the US accountable for its blatant violations” of international regulations.

By imposing and enforcing such sanctions, the Iranian official said, the United States has also turned a blind eye to international norms and directly targeted individuals and institutions that help promote internal and regional security.

Tensions have soared between Iran and the US since President Donald Trump pulled Washington out of the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and the P5+1 group of countries consisting of the United States, the UK, France, Russia, and China plus Germany, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Since scrapping the JCPOA in May 2018, the Trump administration has unleashed its “toughest ever” sanctions against Iran.
