Police probe bus crash into train station in Hamburg

A regional bus crashed into the Bergedorf train station in Hamburg on Wednesday afternoon.

The bus bound for Geesthacht swerved to the right for unclear reasons, broke through the glass of the train station and finally came to a halt over the station's escalators.

No serious injures were reported as there were no passengers on the bus during the accident and the escalator had previously been stopped for maintenance. The bus driver was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries and a passerby also sustained slight injuries from flying fragments, but he did not require medical attention.

According to a spokesperson of the Hamburg/ Holstein transport (VHH GMH) company Anja Gierke, the reasons behind the accident are still being investigated by the police where technical malfunctions, as well as careless driving, will be officially reviewed before further legal actions are pursued.

"We need to probe whether the driver was driving under good conditions, whether there was something defective about the bus. That's why the vehicle will be secured and placed under official investigation and after the police are done with the investigation, we will get the bus back to our terminals," said Gierke.
