Russia: Fire engulfs Siberian penitentiary following riot

Footage from Friday evening shows fire that broke out at the Irkutsk region’s Angarsk city Penal Colony 15, following unrest on Thursday.

Fire can be seen engulfing a number of one-storey buildings in the prison manufacturing enclosure. As the Irkutsk region Penitentiary Service said in a statement, the riot began on Thursday evening when one of the prisoners refused to allow the search, while being in an isolation cell for allegedly violating the rules.

Those who found themselves in the neighboring cells “broke security cameras’ lenses and used the shards of glass to cut their forearms,” the statement said. They managed to attack a guard as well, according to the investigative committee.

Then according to the committee, the riot led to Friday fire. The Irkutsk region Penitentiary Service officials as well as the committee’s inquiry officers are questioning the prisoners and staff.

As the Service said, the injured guard was hospitalized and remained in stable condition, while the prisoners also received medical help.
