Voting for new members of the parliament is both a religious and national duty. That’s according to many Iranians, who say they will support the most deserving candidates to represent them in the parliament.

More than 7,000 candidates are competing for the legislative vote on Friday, including dozens of incumbent members, as well as many Principlists and Reformist groups. Friday’s vote comes amid growing public interest across the country for taking part in the elections.

The latest opinion polls suggest a massive turnout on Friday, especially in provincial towns and villages. Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and President Hassan Rouhani have both called on the people to take part in the country’s 11th parliamentary election and the Assembly of Experts by-election on Friday.

Nearly 58 million Iranians are eligible to take part in elections on Friday, February 21, to send 290 representatives to the new parliament. The Interior Ministry will begin counting the nationwide votes on Saturday.
