At a packed-out Brussels Press Club conference in the Belgian capital, the Chinese Ambassador to the EU Zhang Ming answered questions from journalists regarding a whole range of issues.

At the event, he described the Iran nuclear deal as an important result of global diplomacy. It is conducive to regional and global peace and stability, he told reporters.

The 2015 Iran nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or the JCPOA, is endorsed by the United Nations. However, in 2018, Donald Trump pulled his country out of the accord. Since then, the US president has been applying "maximum pressure" to nations to cut their business ties with Iran to zero. Tehran has labeled this economic terrorism.

In its capacity as coordinator of the agreement, the EU continues to repeat its mantra that the 27-country bloc is fully committed to saving the Iran nuclear deal. The question is: where is the EU's concrete action to ensure Iran benefits economically from the agreement? We've raised this matter with the bloc's executive arm, the European Commission.

There are many political commentators who are suggesting that as the very powerful Israel lobby and Saudi Arabia continue to pull the strings inside the current US administration, saving the Iran nuclear deal will remain an enormous challenge.
