US Senator and Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has surged in recent polls in the race for the White House, provoking attacks from both President Donald Trump and Senator Elizabeth Warren.

Sanders, 78, has been rising in a handful of state and national polls over the past month and is seen to have momentum heading into the final three weeks before the first Democratic primary election takes place in the state of Iowa.

“Wow! Crazy Bernie Sanders is surging in the polls, looking very good against his opponents in the Do Nothing Party. So what does this all mean? Stay tuned!” Trump tweeted on Sunday.

But it was Warren who offered the sharpest criticism of the Vermont senator.

“We cannot nominate someone who takes big chunks of the Democratic coalition for granted. We need someone who will bring our party together,” she told reporters after a campaign event in Iowa,” she tweeted.

“We need someone who will excite every part of the Democratic Party, someone who will be there, someone that every Democrat can believe in,” she added.

Both Sanders and Warren, who are vying for the progressive base in the primary election and largely agree on many of the biggest issues in the race, have up until now publicly avoided criticizing one another and in fact have been complimentary of each other.

Trump’s decision to single-out Sanders could indicate a change in tactics for the Republican president’s 2020 campaign, which has previously focused on attacking former Vice President Biden as his likely challenger in the election.

But despite Sander’s recent polling boost, the national race shows him clearly trailing Biden and still tight with Warren, the candidate he replaced.

Biden, who a majority of national polls show as the clear Democratic favorite among registered primary voters, maintains solid leads over Sanders and the rest of the candidates in several of the first state contests.

In recent weeks, Sanders has intensified his criticism of the former vice president and argued that voters are not sufficiently energized by Biden’s campaign to defeat Trump.

Biden's campaign has largely brushed off criticism from Sanders and has instead focused on criticizing Trump's reelection effort.
