Corbyn urges resistance to Tory hard right agenda

Jeremy Corbyn has tried to rally the Labour grassroots for a renewed fight against the Tories

The leader of the Labour party, Jeremy Corbyn, has called for “resistance” to Tory rule as Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, prepares to implement his hard right agenda.

In his New Year message, the Labour leader conceded that the party faces “tough times” ahead but maintained that the Labour movement remains strong and resilient.

And in a textbook demonstration of stoicism, Corbyn proclaimed that there is “no other choice” but to continue the fight against “poverty, inequality and climate change”.

"Make no mistake, our movement is very strong ... we're not backed by the press barons, by the billionaires or by the millionaires who work for the billionaires ... We're backed by you … We are by the many, for the many”, Corbyn said, alluding to the fact that he has built a 500,000 strong grassroots movement.

Corbyn is expected to step down early in the New Year so as to facilitate a leadership contest that is expected to last three months.

Hitherto, only two candidates have formally declared their intention to contest the Labour leadership race, namely shadow foreign secretary, Emily Thornberry, and shadow Treasury minister, Clive Lewis.

The shadow secretary for business, energy and industrial strategy, Rebecca Long-Bailey and the MP for Normanton, Pontefract and Castleford, Yvette Cooper, are also expected to formally declare their candidature soon.

Another potential contender is shadow Brexit secretary, Keir Starmer.

Rebecca Long-Bailey (who is a Corbyn ally) and Yvette Cooper are widely considered to be the frontrunners to replace Corbyn as party leader.
