Barricades burn as Haiti protesters head to US embassy
Hundreds of Haitians took to the streets of Port-au-Prince on Friday (December 06) to call for the resignation of President Jovenel Moise, marching toward the US Embassy for their cries to be heard.
Anti-government protesters accuse the US of meddling in internal affairs of the country and backing the embattled Moise government. An anti-riot barrier had kept protesters away from the embassy building.
Haiti, the poorest country in the Americas, has been rocked by violent protests over the past several months that have led to schools, public offices and businesses closing and forced non-governmental organisations to suspend aid distribution.
Opposition leaders and their supporters in the nation of 11 million are calling for the resignation of Moise, 51, amid anger over fuel and food shortages, a steep currency devaluation and corruption allegations.
More than one-in-three Haitians need urgent assistance to meet their daily food requirements, meaning nearly 3.7 million people, the UN World Food Programme (WFP) said earlier this month.
