In the early hours of Tuesday, a senior commander from the Palestinian resistance movement Islamic Jihad, Baha Abu al-Ata, was killed in an Israeli airstrike which targeted his house in the Gaza Strip.

The attack also killed al-Ata's wife and wounded two more people.

Thousands of people took part in the funeral held for the top Islamic Jihad commander in the morning.

Mourners condemned the Israeli strike, with the Islamic Jihad vowing a firm response.

The incident prompted retaliatory rocket fire from Gaza, with many fearing a severe escalation.

Islamic Jihad says it holds Israel full responsible for all the consequences of this escalation.

A general strike was called in Gaza which continued to be targeted by deadly Israeli airstrikes on Tuesday.

Gazans say despite such deadly attacks they will continue fighting the Israeli occupation.

Palestinian resistance movement Hamas also released a statement condemning the killing of al-Ata. The movement said it held Israel responsible for all consequences and stressed that the killing will not go unpunished.

The persisting violations and the killings of leaders of the Resistance movements have angered Palestinians with the Islamic Jihad promising a tough response.
