Germany: Berlin students rally to 'stop the war in northeastern Syria'

Students occupied several classrooms of the Institute of Social Sciences in Berlin's Humboldt University on October 24, 2019.

Students occupied several classrooms of the Institute of Social Sciences in Berlin's Humboldt University on Thursday, in protest at the Turkish military's incursion into northern Syria.

The demonstrators condemned the Turkish offensive in the region, calling on Ankara to "stop the war in northeastern Syria."

Banners and placards were put up inside and outside the university building, reading, "Turkey kills, Germany finances, the world keeps silent," among others.

The police cleared the classrooms in the afternoon, prompting the protests to continue outside.

Ankara's military offensive, dubbed 'Operation Peace Spring', began on October 9 with the aim of creating a 'safe zone' in northeastern Syria.
