At least 5 people have been killed and 92 injured as the result of a train derailment in southeast Iran.
The incident took place on Wednesday, as the train with some 250 passengers was on a 1,500-kilometer (930-mile) journey from Zahedan city, the provincial capital of Sistan and Baluchestan province near the Pakistan border, to the capital Tehran.
Three women and one man lost their lives in the incident, Iran's Railways company confirmed.
The head of Sistan & Baluchestan's Red Crescent said 35 of the injured were taken to nearby hospitals. At least eight people had to be flown onboard helicopters due to their critical injuries.
During the incident, one of train's wagons derailed after hitting sand-covered rails in the Shuru area, some 60 kilometers (37 miles) southwest of Zahedan. The area has gained notoriety for it sudden sandstorms.
The Iranian Railways was investigating the possible reason for the incident in coordination with local authorities.
Rescue teams from Zahedan and other nearby cities were present at the site of the incident. The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) was also helping the rescue operations.
