World Wrestling Championships: Iran's Yazdani claims gold

Iran’s freestyle wrestling team have won their first gold medal in the 2019 World Wrestling Championships in Kazakhstan courtesy of Hassan Yazdani in the 86-kilogram category.

The 2016 Olympics and 2017 World Champion won gold after his Indian opponent Deepak Punia pulled out of the final due to injury.

The Iranian wrestler had reached the showpiece after defeating rivals from San Marino, Russia, Hungary and Puerto Rico.

Also on Sunday, Behnam Ehsanpour, who had narrowly lost out on a place in the final of the 61-kilogram division, claimed bronze for Iran following an 8-0 routing of Abbos Rakhmonov of Uzbekistan in the bronze medal repechage.

The Iranian freestyle team concluded its campaign at the 2019 World Wrestling Championships in Kazakhstan with one gold, one bronze and two silver medals, finishing fourth behind Russia, the hosts and the United States.
