UN envoy arrives in Syria ahead of talks

United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen

The United Nations special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, arrived in Damascus on Sunday (September 22) ahead of talks scheduled with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem.

Pedersen, who told reporters 'some progress' had been made since his last visit, is set to meet senior Syrian officials to discuss the make-up of a committee tasked with drafting a new constitution for the war-ravaged country.

"I had good and productive meetings with Foreign Minister Muallem during my last visit to Damascus. Since then, I believe I've made some progress... the total package... on the work we are doing on the constitutional committee and therefore I'm looking very much forward to my meeting with the Foreign Minister Muallem tomorrow," Pedersen told reporters.
