An American political analyst says the United States has no concern for the democratic rights of the Venezuelan people, it only wants to impose a willing stooge on them so that their country’s vast oil wealth can be plundered by US oil companies.
Dennis Etler, an American political analyst who has a decades-long interest in international affairs, made the remarks in an interview with Press TV on Friday.
The United Nations' human rights chief has warned that the latest US sanctions against Venezuela will worsen the situation for millions of “long-suffering” people across the oil-rich country.
US President Donald Trump issued an executive order on Monday, stating that "all property and interests in property of the government of Venezuela that are in the United States... are blocked and may not be transferred, paid, exported, withdrawn, or otherwise dealt in.”
The order is also designed to prevent third-party countries doing business with the government of President Nicolas Maduro.
The new measures alarmed the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, who said the sanctions were "extremely broad".
Etler said, “The latest round of unilateral US sanctions against Venezuela are completely illegal and have no basis in international law. The US has a long and sordid history of interfering in the internal affairs of any nation that it has targeted for regime change, and Venezuela is a prime example.”
“The US has no concern for the democratic rights of the Venezuelan people. All it wants is to impose a willing US backed stooge on them in order to convert Venezuela from a free and independent socialist country dedicated to uplifting the majority of its people out of poverty, into a compliant accomplice and dupe of US imperialism so that its vast oil wealth can be plundered by US oil companies,” he stated.
“The rogue US even threatens other nations from trading with Venezuela and is stopping shipments of food to the country, showing the world that it is a terrorist nation and the enemy of the world's people,” he said.
“The welfare of the Venezuelan people is the last thing on the minds of Trump, Pompeo and Bolton, the three horsemen of the Venezuelan apocalypse,” he noted.
