Half of US voters say Trump is racist: Poll
An opinion poll shows that half of American voters consider US President Donald Trump to be racist.
The poll, conducted by the Quinnipiac University and published on Tuesday, found that 51 percent of American voters believed Trump was racist, while 45 percent said the opposite.
Among African Americans, 80 percent said they considered Trump to be racist and just 11 percent of them said he was not, according to the survey. Fifty-five percent of Latinos also said the US president was racist.
Quinnipiac surveyed 1,306 voters nationwide from July 25 to 28, with a margin of error of 3.4 percentage points.
The poll comes as Trump has come under fire in recent weeks for a series of remarks widely denounced as racist.
Trump sparked an uproar two weeks ago after lashing out at four minority Democratic congresswomen, known as “The Squad”, telling them to go back where they came from if they do not like the United States.
In racist tweets, Trump told Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Rashida Tlaib Michigan, Ayanna Pressley Massachusetts and Ilhan Omar of Minnesota to go back to fix their “broken, crime-infested” countries of origin before teaching how to run the US and speaking out about US policies.
Three of the four Representatives were born in the United States, but all are US citizens.
Both Democratic and Republican lawmakers have so far condemned Trump's racist tweets, however, he has adamantly stood by his comments about the congresswomen, saying that they should leave the US if they are unhappy.
In a fresh attack on an another prominent African-American lawmaker, the US president slammed Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) and the city of Baltimore which Cummings represents.
Trump called Cummings “a brutal bully” and described his district as “a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess.”
Cummings is a frequent critic of Trump and has launched several investigations into the Trump administration regarding the Republican president’s finances as well as some White House-related issues, including security clearances.
Trump's attacks have widely been seen as a bid to rally his right-wing base as the 2020 White House race heats up -- at the risk of inflaming racial tensions and deepening partisan divisions in America.
