Commuters took to the streets of Sao Paulo on Thursday to protest recent fare increases on public transportation.

Protesters vowed to bring the city to a halt if the planned rise is not reversed.

Critics argue that the bus fare increase of 4 to 4.3 Brazilian Reals, or 7.5 per cent, is twice that of inflation - 3.59 percent.
