British Prime Minister Theresa May has used her New Year message to urge lawmakers in the parliament to approve her deal for withdrawal from the European Union, saying it would bring about a serious improvement in the way the country is governed.

“New Year is a time to look ahead and in 2019 the UK will start a new chapter. The Brexit deal I have negotiated delivers on the vote of the British people and in the next few weeks MPs (members of parliament) will have an important decision to make,” May said in her video message, adding, “If parliament backs a deal, Britain can turn a corner.”

The appeal comes as May would go to the House of Parliament in mid-January to face a crunch vote on her Brexit deal. She delayed an original vote planned for early December, fearing that the deal could be rejected.

May said in her message that approving the Brexit deal in the Commons would allow her government to focus on solving domestic problems such as housing and a skill shortage.

“Important though Brexit is, it is not the only issue that counts,” she said, adding, “Together I believe we can start a new chapter with optimism and hope.”

However, many believe the Commons will finally reject the draft Brexit deal signed between May’s government and the EU last month and Britain will be forced to leave the EU on March 29, 2019, without an agreement that could outline divorce terms as well as future relations.

Opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn also used his new year message to criticize May and her Brexiot deal, saying that the agreement was a “complete mess”.

“And now the Conservatives have plunged the country into crisis over the complete mess they’ve made of Brexit, trying to drive through a bad deal and letting people down all across the country whether they voted Leave or Remain,” said Corbyn.
