Thousands flood streets of Athens to protest NATO base proposals
Thousands of supporters of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) took to the streets of Athens on Tuesday to protest against proposals for the creation of new NATO bases in Greece and the expansion of existing ones.
Participants chanted anti-NATO and anti-capitalist slogans as they marched from the Ministry of National Defense to the US Embassy. General Secretary of the KKE Dimitris Koutsoumpas spoke at the event, saying that the "bases are used to launch war" and "spew fire and death against people."
Greek Defense Minister Panos Kammenos proposed the establishment of three new NATO bases in Greece to his counterpart US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis during an official visit to Washington D.C. on October 10.
