Pompeo pats himself in the back for ‘another step forward’ in N Korea ties
The administration of US President Donald Trump is boasting about “another step forward” in negotiations with North Korea.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Sunday that he and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un have made progress towards denuclearization of the Asian country.
After several hours in Pyongyang on his fourth visit to North Korea, Pompeo refused to specify any details about the progress despite a request by South Korean President Moon Jae-in.
“I dearly hope that your latest visit, as well as the upcoming U.S.-North Korea summit, which I hope will be happening soon, will make an irreversible, decisive progress in terms of the denuclearization as well as the peace process,” Moon said. “Since we have the media present here, I would like to ask you to disclose anything that you can open to the public here.”
The former CIA chief, however, said he preferred to speak in private about the matter.
“I will certainly tell you in private about our conversation, but we had a good, productive conversation,” Pompeo said. “As President Trump said, there are many steps along the way and we took one of them today. It was another step forward. So this is, I think, a good outcome for all of us.”
Meanwhile, Trump raised the possibility of a second summit with Kim, after the one in Singapore, by tweeting from home.
“I look forward to seeing Chairman Kim again, in the near future,” said the president.
Amid escalating tensions between Washington and Pyongyang, Trump recently made an unexpected decision to meet with the North Korean leader.
The Trump-Kim summit marked the first such meeting between a sitting US president and a North Korean leader in history.
The US has been engaged in diplomacy with Pyongyang after the June summit but apparently with little progress.
