Iranian futsal club Mes Sungun Varzaghan has captured the crown at the 2018 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Futsal Club Championship, after it could down Thái Sơn Nam of Vietnam in the title showdown.

The Iranian sportsmen, who had managed to overcome Naft al-Wasat of Iraq 3-2 in a thrilling semifinal fixture two days earlier, defeated the Southeast Asian squad 4-2 in a match played at the multi-purpose GOR UNY stadium in the Indonesian city of Yogyakarta on Sunday evening.

Both teams were so close throughout the first half and put in impressive performances. They scored two goals each, and went into the cloakrooms tied at two.

Mes Sungun players, however, intensified pressure after the break. Their efforts soon paid off as they buried the ball at the back of the opposite side’s net and took the lead.

Even though the Iranian team had a number of scoring chances later on to extend the deficit, Thái Sơn Nam goalkeeper pulled off brilliant saves to deny Iranians the opportunities.

The Vietnamese squad applied pressure in the closing minutes of the match, but all to no avail as it could not turn the result round.

Iranians netted another goal afterwards and were 4-2 ahead.

The straw that broke the camel's back for Thái Sơn Nam came only a minute before the end of the regulation time when the referee flashed a red card on one of its players and sent him off.

Hossein Tayyebi together with Ali Asghar Hassanzadeh Navlighi each scored a goal for Mes Sungun, while Farhad Fakhimzadeh jabbed a brace.

Earlier on Sunday, Lebanon’s Bank of Beirut took the bronze by beating Naft 5-3 in a play-off for the third place.

The 2018 AFC Futsal Club Championship, which was the 9th edition of the AFC Futsal Club Championship, started on August 1 and finished on August 12, 2018.
