The Iran men’s national under-18 basketball team has suffered a bitter defeat at the hands of New Zealand in the 2018 Fédération Internationale de Basket-ball (FIBA) Under-18 Asian Championship, and failed to book itself a spot in the 2019 FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup.
On Thursday, the Iranian squad fell to New Zealand 72-87 in a quarterfinal encounter at Stadium 29 of the central Thai city of Nonthaburi.
The Iranian sportsmen had managed to roll to a 71-64 victory over Japan in their previous match on Tuesday.
The Iranian squad defeated Kazakhstan 86-54 on Monday. The Iran men’s national under-18 basketball team managed to clinch an 80-50 win over Indonesia in its opening match on August 5.
The 2018 FIBA Under-18 Asian Championship got underway on August 5, and will run through August 11, 2018.
The top four finishers will qualify for the 2019 FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup, and will represent FIBA Asia in the upcoming tournament.
