Palestine:Women of occupation

Summary: In this episode Hayat Amous Zughaier talks about her personal experiences and her life story under the occupation and the situation of women in Palestine. In 1967 at the time of Six-Day War Hayat was four years old when her grandfather shot to death, and her uncle injured badly by Israeli sodiers. She explains that two of her fathers’ best friends were shoot to death in front of his eyes. Most of her neighbours, families and friends were killed or kicked out from their homes and Hayat and her families faced difficult times while they have lost their house and monies. At the age of 17 Hayat became the only supporter of her family. So, she left school and worked really hard for her family to survive. When Hayat married and had four children she went back to school and achieved her dream to be an educated women in order to help Palestinians. She received her diploma, bachelor of art and master degree before she became a grandmother. Hayat quotes from Paolo Coelho’s book ‘The Spy’ where he says: “I am a woman who was born at a wrong time and nothing can be done to fix it. I don’t know if the future will remember me but if does, may it never see me as a victim, but as someone who moved forward with courage, fearlessly paying the price she had to pay.”
