Trump urged to ‘understand Putin’s tactics’ amid criticism

The former US ambassador to Russia is urging President Donald Trump to understand “tactics” used by his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.

Michael McFaul made the comment in a tweet on Sunday.

Members of Congress are, meanwhile, mounting pressure on the White House to let them know what happened in the two-hour private meeting between Trump and Putin in the Finnish capital Helsinki.

At a press conference following the last Monday summit, Trump backed the Russian leader’s idea about alleged meddling in the 2016 presidential election rather the American intelligence community’s.

Putin also suggested that he would let US observe questioning of Russians indicted in the special counsel's probe if Russians can instead question McFaul and other Americans who are accused of committing crimes in Russia.

"Of course I broke no Russian law," McFaul said Sunday. "But Putin uses disinformation & the law to silence his critics or chase them out of the country as you know well. Time for the rest of the world, including the President of the United States, to understand Putins [sic] tactics & reject them."

PressTV-Trump’s Russia envoy says won’t resign

US President Donald Trump’s envoy in Russia, who has been under pressure to resign in the wake of his boss’s summit with President Vladimir Putin, says he won’t step down.

Alongside Putin, Trump initially welcomed the initiative, calling it an "incredible offer" but later the White House said he “disagrees” with it.

Trump’s mere consideration drew backlash from both side of the aisle in US Congress, where the Republicans even passed a resolution warning their president to scrap the idea.

The summit in Helsinki last Wednesday kicked off a hailstorm of criticism against Trump, forcing him to deny his comment about alleged Russian meddling.

Ever since Trump was inaugurated in January 2017, the US intelligence community has overwhelmingly maintained that Moscow sought to meddle in the 2016 election.
