US President Donald Trump has stressed the need for Republicans to maintain their majority in the House of Representatives in the upcoming midterm elections; otherwise he would face impeachment from Democrats.

“We have to keep the House because if we listen to Maxine Waters, she’s going around saying ‘We will impeach him,’ ” Trump said at a Michigan rally on Saturday.

The president said Republicans should not become complacent because they currently control both chambers of Congress as well as the White House.

“We cannot be complacent — we gotta go out and we gotta fight like hell and we gotta win the House and we gotta win the Senate,” he said.

Rep. Maxine Waters, a Democrat from California, is a leading voice on Capitol Hill calling for President Trump to resign or face impeachment.

At the 2018 TIME 100 Gala in New York last week, Waters urged Trump to “please resign.”

“So that I won’t have to keep up this fight of your having to be impeached because I don’t think you deserve to be there,” the congresswoman said. “Just get out.”

A new Quinnipiac poll shows that more than 70 percent of Democratic voters would want congressional Democrats to impeach Trump if they win the House in November.

Under US law, impeachment proceedings must originate in the House.

Many Democrats have indicated that firing Special Counsel Robert Mueller is their "red line" for impeachment. Mueller, a former FBI director, is investigating the Russian meddling in the 2016 election and possible collusion by the Trump campaign.

Some strategists say impeachment is more than just a talking point for Democrats seeking to wrest control of Congress from Republicans -- it is a call to action.

A number of House Democrats have already pushed for Trump’s removal from office on grounds that he has committed crimes by obstructing justice in his efforts to shut down the Russia investigation.

Others are trying to invoke the 25th Amendment of the US Constitution, a potential path to impeachment that requires a majority of Trump’s cabinet to determine that the president is physically or mentally unfit for the job.
