Seven people were killed in an accident at a railway crossing in Cape Town where a train hit a truck early Friday morning.

Authority says the truck ran a red light at the level crossing which resulted in the accident, killing seven in the vehicle. The truck followed a medium-size bus which also ran the red signal, but was unable to pass the approaching train, according to information provided by the train driver.

"Early this morning we were informed of a Toyota Hilux bakkie that was actually hit by our train on this line which was the Buttskop level crossing. What we were informed about was that there were seven occupants that were killed instantly. What happened was that they passed a red signal, which was not supposed to be," said Zino Mihi the Spokesperson of Metrorail of Western Cape.

The tragedy occurred in the same place where an accident involving a taxi and a train took the lives of 10 children in August 25 of 2010.
