Ukraine police clash with protesters in Kiev, 10 injured
Police have clashed with anti-government protesters in the Ukrainian capital city of Kiev, arresting over 100 people and leaving at least 10 injured.
The incident took place on Saturday when police officers moved in to dismantle a protest camp near the parliament building and met with resistance by the protesters.
The makeshift tent camp was set up in October last year by the supporters of Mikheil Saakashvili, Georgia's former president, after he was stripped of his Ukrainian citizenship. Saakashvili, 50, was deported to Poland last month. He is accused of trying to stage a coup in Ukraine, where he has led rallies calling for President Petro Poroshenko's ouster, accusing him of failing to fight corruption.
The majority of Saakashvili's supporters left the camp after his departure, but some activists remained.
Police said about 100 activists had been detained, while six protesters and four police officers were hurt in the clashes.
"We have two court decisions to inspect and search this area ... Then communal workers will clean it up," Andriy Kryshchneko, head of Kiev police, told reporters at the scene.
Grenades, fire and smoke bombs were found in the camp during the raid, police said.
"Police in riot gear approached from two sides and detained almost all the people (in the camp). Trucks started dragging apart and demolishing the barricades," said Yehor Sobolev, a lawmaker and Saakashvili's ally.
The camp is an offshoot of a broader opposition movement that holds regular peaceful protests in Kiev demanding the resignation of Poroshenko over a stalled reform drive.
