Iranian grandmaster Maghsoodloo takes crown in 26th Fajr Cup 2018 (Group A)

Iranian chess grandmaster Parham Maghsoodloo has clinched the title at the conclusion of the 26th edition of Fajr Cup 2018 (Group A) in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

On Saturday, the 17-year-old Iranian sportsman, who holds the 2594th spot in the Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE) rankings, won the tournament with 5.7 points out of nine matches.

Russia’s 30-year-old grandmaster Pavel Ponkratov came second, while Ukrainian grandmaster Yuriy Kuzubov finished in the third place.

Iranian grandmasters Amirreza Pourramezanali, Seyyed Mohammad Amin Tabatabaei, Alireza Firouzja and Ehsan Ghaem Maghami landed in the fourth to seventh positions respectively.

The 26th edition of Fajr Cup 2018 (Group A) began at the Oxin Recreational and Commercial Resort of the northern Iranian city of Amol on February 3, and finished on February 10, 2018.

The event reportedly brought together s 353 chess players from 24 countries, namely Afghanistan, Armenia, Australia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Denmark, France, Georgia, Ghana, India, Iraq, Ireland, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Portugal, Russia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Syria, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Ukraine.

The championship was played as a Swiss system tournament. Trophies, medals and certificates were awarded to the top three athletes.
