Saudi-led alliance intensifies war on Yemen

The Saudi-led alliance that has waged a war on Yemen since 2015 has intensified its attacks on the poor nation of the Arab world. There is no single day without a report on fresh civilian casualties as a result of Saudi-led strikes. In the latest such strikes, at least 20 were killed in Yemen’s Red Sea port city of Hudaydah on Monday. The tragedy occurred when a market crowded with shoppers was targeted. This has been the dominant pattern in most previous attacks. It clearly shows that the Saudi-led alliance is conducting a collective punishment of the public for the resistance of Houthi Ansarullah fighters.

Iran protests

Iran’s capital Tehran and several other cities were in recent days the scene of protests over economic conditions and alleged corruption. The demonstrations also had a political tone, with the demonstrators chanting slogans against some political factions and government bodies. The protests began peacefully last week but later turned violent at some points with some individuals damaging public property. Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani has defended people’s right to peacefully voice their discontent with economic conditions. He has however condemned violence and rejected actions that would undermine Iran’s security and national interests. Certain regional and Western leaders were quick to take advantage of the situation in Iran. Among them was US President Donald Trump who posted twits expressing sympathy with the Iranians just weeks after calling Iran a terrorist nation. President Rouhani had tough word for Trump.
