A gift-wrapped box of horse manure has been sent to the house of US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, sparking a bomb scare and triggering an investigation by the US Secret Service.

The suspicious package, addressed to Mnuchin’s Los Angeles home was found at 19:40 (03:40 GMT) at the home next to Mnuchin's in Bel Air.

The “gift” had been wrapped in a paper, which said it was sent from “the American people.”

The Los Angeles Police Department’s bomb squad was immediately called to handle the box.

The move reportedly caused troubles for some of the secretary’s high-profile neighbors.

"We have $50 million homes and we can't move, we can't get out," actress Zsa Zsa Gabor's widower Prince Frederick von Anhalt, who was trapped for two hours, told CBS. "That's bad, they have to find another way."

Mnuchin is a pro-Israel millionaire, who formerly worked as a Goldman Sachs Group executive and Hollywood film financier.
