Hundreds gathered in Barcelona's University Square on Sunday for a rally calling for the release of former Catalan leaders who are being held in Madrid on charges of sedition.

The protesters, many of whom wore Guy Fawkes masks, held up posters carrying images of the detained Catalan politicians and chanted, "freedom."

Organizers of the rally encouraged the protesters to plaster the posters across Catalonia.
