Unionists clashed with police in central Barcelona on Friday, soon after the Catalan government declared independence from Madrid.

Anti-independence protesters gathered in Plaza de Artos before making their way, unauthorised, to Paseo de Gracia. Protesters were met by a police cordon but proceeded to pass through regardless.

Tensions have flared in Barcelona following the declaration of independence and Madrid's decision to impose direct rule over Catalonia. Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has since dissolved the government of former Catalan President Carles Puigdemont and has called for fresh elections.
