Iran second best Asian basketball team in new FIBA rankings

The Iranian men’s national basketball team has been named the second best Asian squad in the latest edition of the Fédération Internationale de Basketball Amateur (FIBA) rankings, and claimed the world’s 22nd spot.

According to the rankings released by the FIBA, an association of national organizations which governs international competition in basketball, the Iranian outfit notched up 252.7 points.

The 2017 FIBA Asia Cup champion Australia took the top place in Asia and sat in the ninth slot in the global rankings with 470.4 points.

The Iranian squad was followed by New Zealand and the Philippines, which landed in the 27th and 30th spots respectively, having gained 208.8 and 207.6 points.

The United States stood on the top of the global rankings with 819.6 points.

Spain accumulated 693.2 points to claim the second position. Serbia sat in the third place with 641.0 points.

Fourth-placed France tallied 634.9 points. Argentina stood fifth, having racked up 615.5 points.
