Awamiyah siege by Saudi Arabia

Peaceful settlement of disputes is seemingly not an option for Saudi Arabia whose military has incessantly been pounding neighboring Yemen since March 2015.  Whether at home or abroad, Riyadh knows only one way to deal with various issues and that is using military force. This is the kingdom’s Shia-majority town of Awamiyah in Eastern Province which has been placed under a government siege for 3 months now. Saudi forces sealed off the town in the wake of deadly clashes with activists protesting against Riyadh’s plans to demolish and redevelop ancient sites there. Thousands of Awamiyah residents have been forced to flee their homes with dozens of civilians killed in the government’s heavy-handed crackdown on demonstrators.

US forces on the ground in Yemen

The plight of millions of Yemenis living under a years-long Saudi-led military campaign continues unabated. Other indications have also appeared that show the Saudis are not the only party to blame for the plight of the Yemenis. The Pentagon in a rare acknowledgement this past week said it had deployed a contingent of troops to Yemen. It said the troops would assist government forces against al-Qaeda terrorists based in the southern parts of the country. But it is speculated that this could be just the tip of the iceberg in a wider campaign against popular forces that are defending Yemen against the Saudi-led war.
