Syrian army soldiers and allied popular defense groups have gained more grounds in Dayr al-Zawr as they are trying to flush Daesh Takfiri terrorists and other foreign-sponsored militants out of the strategic eastern city.

On Thursday, Syrian troops and pro-government fighters managed to recapture a factory, and liberate the local airport from the militants, Syria’s official news agency SANA reported.

Syrian government forces also clashed with Daesh militants as they sought to attack a number of military posts in Liwa al-Taamin district, south of Dayr al-Zawr.

An unnamed local source said a number of Daesh terrorists were killed and injured during the counter-terrorism operations. Considerable amounts of weapons and munitions belonging to the extremists were also destroyed.

Separately, Syrian army units continued their operations against Daesh positions in the eastern sector of the central province of Homs, establishing control over the villages of al-Hattaniyeh and Bir al-Marhatan.

Scores of Takfiris were killed in the wake of fierce clashes between Syrian government forces and Daesh terrorists there. Three pickup trucks belonging to the militants and equipped with heavy machineguns were also destroyed.

Earlier, Syrian army units and popular defense fighters had established control over the strategic Jahar intersection on the road linking Homs to the ancient Semitic city of Palmyra.
