Argentinians have taken to the streets in Buenos Aires to protest their government's support for new Brazilian President Michel Temer and voice solidarity with his predecessor Dilma Rousseff.

Protesters convened at the main square in the center of the capital on Monday, holding signs which read, “Never Temer. Temer out!” as the Brazilian president arrived for an official visit.

They also denounced a decision by the administration of Argentine President Mauricio Macri to accept Temer’s government as legitimate.

Macri welcomed Temer who arrived for his first official visit to the fellow South American country since taking office on August 31.

Temer replaced Rousseff after the upper chamber of parliament voted to suspend her and began an impeachment trial against her in May that led to her ouster.

Temer is about to remain in office for what would have been the rest of Rousseff’s second term through 2018.

Rousseff was removed from power by Senate over allegedly breaking fiscal rules and tampering with the 2014 federal budget.

She has strongly rejected the allegations, calling the impeachment a coup d’état and denouncing Temer as a “usurper.”

The impeachment and its result have so far sparked numerous rallies across Brazil in her favor and in condemnation of the move.

“We reject Macri because his government was the first one to accept Temer’s government as legitimate," said a Brazilian protester in the Monday protest.

Some of Argentina’s political and social unions, including the center-left Front for the Victory and the Movement Evita, also slammed the visit.
