SpaceX Elon Musk outlines vision to colonize Mars
Billionaire tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has outlined an ambitious plan for a fully reusable transportation system that will take 100 people to Mars with a $200,000-ticket.
SpaceX’s chief announced on Tuesday that his company has plans to build a "city" on Mars after sending humans there on huge spacecraft with cabins, restaurants, zero-gravity games and movies.
"It has to be fun or exciting. It can't feel cramped or boring," he noted. "We need to go from these early exploration missions to actually building a city," he while giving a speech at an expo center western Mexican city of Guadalajara.
His Mars colonization plans include a fully reusable transportation system capable of carrying some 100 people to the red planet during an 80-day trip.
"I want to make Mars seem possible, something we can do in our lifetimes… and that anyone can go if they wanted too," he added.
The ship will use methane and oxygen, gathered while in Earth and Mars’s orbit, as fuel to make the trip.
Musk added that the goal of his plan is "making this affordable to almost anyone who wants to go," noting that over time its cost will be dropped to $100,000.
He noted that the colony would need around one million people to render it fully self sustainable, adding that such a population would take around 100 years to gather.
According to SpaceX's timeline for its Mars colonization plans, the first exploratory flight could be as early as 2022. Musk said that he wishes to name the first ship “The Heart of Gold”, after a spaceship in Douglas Adams' book The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
Its scheduled to launch from the Nasa's Kennedy Space Centre pad 39, where the Apollo Moon missions where Lunched.
Musk states his reason for wanting to travel to Mars is that "Without someone with a real ideological commitment, it didn't seem we were on any trajectory to become a spacefaring civilization."
