Iranian athletes collect four more medals in Rio 2016 Paralympics

Iranian sportsmen have collected four medals, including two golds, at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

On Monday, Majid Farzin took part in the men’s minus 80-kilogram Group A competitions of the tournament at the 6500-seat indoor Riocentro-Pavilion 2 arena, and raised 240 kilograms overhead to stand atop the podium.

Farzin also managed to improve his own world mark by four kilograms.

“I had trained intensely for months to clinch this medal. I thank God that all my earlier efforts finally bore fruit, and I could bring honor to my family and nation,” Farzin said after the contest.

Chinese competitor Gu Xiaofei claimed the silver with a lift of 228 kilograms. Uzbek weightlifter Giorgi Chkheidze elevated 207 kilograms to earn the bronze medal.

Iranian Paralympian athlete Sajad Mohammadian vied in the men’s shot put F42 category competitions at the Estádio Olímpico João Havelange, also known as Nilton Santos Stadium, in Engenho de Dentro neighborhood of Rio on Monday, and picked a silver medal for the Islamic Republic with a winning throw of 14.31 meters.

British shot putter Aled Davies threw 15.97 meters to snatch the gold medal.

The bronze went to South Africa’s Tyrone Pillay with a winning throw of 13.91 meters in his final attempt.

In the men’s javelin throw F56/57 division, Iranian pitcher Mohammad Khalvandi exhibited awe-inspiring displays and earned gold with his best effort of 46.12 meters.

His teammate Abdollah Heidari Til won the silver medal with a winning throw of 43.77 meters, and Cao Ngọc Hùng from Vietnam claimed the bronze with 43.27 meters.

The competitions at the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games started on September 8, and will run through September 18.

The Islamic Republic of Iran’s National Paralympic Committee has dispatched a 111-strong delegation, dubbed the Mina Caravan, to the 12-day sporting event. Iranian sportsmen and women are in action in 12 different fields.

Iranian athletes have so far snatched eight medals — three gold and five silvers — putting the Islamic Republic in the 17th slot of the medal count table.

China is on the top of the medal count table with 118 medals, Great Britain is second with 63 medals and Ukraine is third with a total of 61 medals.

The United States, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Uzbekistan and Nigeria are in the 4th to 10th places respectively.
