Larijani, Bartolone discuss parliamentary ties

Iran’s Parliament (Majlis) Speaker Ali Larijani (L) and President of the French National Assembly Claude Bartolone

Iran’s Parliament (Majlis) Speaker Ali Larijani has met with the visiting President of the French Parliament’s National Assembly (lower house) Claude Bartolone. The two have discussed the expansion of parliamentary relations between Tehran and Paris.

Larijani and Bartolone sat down for talks in the capital Tehran on Tuesday.

The pair also discussed regional and international developments.

Speaking at a joint press briefing after the meeting, Larijani described Iran-France relations as “good and age-old,” saying that the two countries share common views concerning the fight against terrorism and the resolution of current crises in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and other countries.

The senior Iranian official also lauded the parliamentary ties between Tehran and Paris, saying that Bartolone’s trip to Iran marks a new page in such relations.

Bartolone arrived in Tehran late on Monday at the invitation of Larijani.

During his stay in Iran, Bartolone will also meet with President Hassan Rouhani, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, and Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani.

Bartolone had initially been scheduled to visit Iran in mid-July, but had to postpone his trip in the wake of a deadly terrorist attack in the southern French city of Nice.

On July 14, a driver drove a truck at high speed into a large crowd of people, who had gathered for the Bastille Day fireworks in Nice, killing at least 84 people, including children.
