Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • The United Nations has condemned the recent deadly Saudi airstrike on a school in Yemen as a violation of international law. Ten children died in the attack which took place on Saturday. Nearly nine-thousand six-hundred people have been killed in Yemen since the beginning of the Saudi war in 2015.
  • Foreign-backed terrorists have retreated from key positions they seized on Sunday in the Syrian city of Aleppo. This followed a massive army counterattack backed by the Russian air power. Fighting has intensified between the army and terrorists in the besieged city in recent weeks.
  • Israeli forces have demolished the house of a Palestinian man near the West Bank city of al-Khalil over an alleged anti-Israeli attack. Mohammad Tra'ayra has been accused of stabbing an Israeli teenager in the West Bank in June. Over 200 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli soldiers since last year.
  • Turkish police have raided three major courts in Istanbul to arrest over 170 suspects, including prosecutors, wanted for July’s failed coup attempt. Over 35000 people have been detained in the post-coup purge of the supporters of US-based opposition figure Fethullah Gulen. Ankara accuses him of plotting the coup.
  • Taliban militants have captured a strategic district in Afghanistan’s northern province of Baghlan. It comes after days of heavy clashes with the Afghan forces that had US air support. Taliban offensives have recently spread from its traditional southern and eastern provinces to more peaceful northern regions.
  • Calls are increasing in Australia, demanding an inquiry into reported mistreatment of asylum-seekers on remote pacific islands. The Australian opposition party says reports out of refugee camps suggest abuse of refugees. The UN has also called on Australia to bring those responsible for abuse to account.
  • The UN Refugee Agency has warned over the dismal conditions at refugee camps for the South Sudanese fleeing civil war. Neighboring countries are dealing with underfunded operations to house the refugees. Nearly a million people have been displaced by the fighting between South Sudanese forces and rebels.
  • An officer has been wounded and one person was rushed to hospital as shots were fired amid scuffles between US police and protesters in Milwaukee. This is the second night of rallies over fatal shooting of a black man. Milwaukee's mayor has deployed the National Guard in the streets.
