Foreign-backed militants in Syria have launched rocket attacks against several residential areas in the northern city of Aleppo, killing two women and a child.

The militants fired rockets at two areas in the Hamadaniyeh neighborhood of Aleppo on Sunday, killing the women and the child, Syria’s official news agency SANA quoted a police source as saying on the same day.

The rocket attacks also wounded three other people, including two women.

Also on Sunday, a woman was killed and her husband injured in a militant rocket attack against Halab al-Jadidah neighborhood in the city.

Militants also fired five rockets at an area near the Municipal Palace and Saadallah al-Jabiri Square in Aleppo, inflicting losses on public and private properties.

A day earlier, 10 people had been killed and 13 others injured in terrorist attacks on Aleppo’s neighborhoods of Hamadaniyeh and Salah al-Din.

The militant attacks come as Syrian forces continue to advance in Aleppo, which is largely held by militants.

Aleppo has been divided since 2012 between government forces in the west and the militants in the east.

According to military sources, large numbers of terrorists have been killed and many others have sustained injuries in heavy fighting over the past few days. A large number of vehicles as well as equipment belonging to the militants have also been destroyed.

The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that 500 militants and government forces were killed in one week of fierce fighting aimed at controlling the strategic city.

Syria has been gripped by foreign-backed militancy since March 2011. The United Nations (UN)’s Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura estimates that over 400,000 people have been killed in the conflict.

The UN has stopped officially counting the deaths in the Syrian conflict, citing its inability to verify figures arriving from various sources.
